Bitcoin, the Rally Without the Crowd, and Who Is Left Holding the Leverage

October 29, 2026 • Monthly Reports
Monthly report thesis

Bitcoin rallied more than 50% from the July low to the September high, and the crowd never showed up. Google search interest just printed three straight weeks at 19, the lowest reading in our data, below even September 2023. The rally was carried by spot ETF inflows, not by retail. In October that institutional bid turned negative, price stalled, and funding stayed positive. The market lost its buyer but kept its leverage.

Bitcoin, the Rally Without the Crowd

We were wrong on the flush, and that matters

Our August report argued that quiet sentiment combined with stubborn leverage was a trap, and that price was more likely to test the 55k area before the bear market closed. That did not happen. Bitcoin closed August up 25%, kept going in September, and reached 87.4k on September 21, more than 50% above the July 1 low of 57.8k. The leverage we flagged did get punished, but on the way up: open interest fell about 18% during September while price kept rising.

We prefer to say this plainly. A framework is only useful if it tells you when it failed. What failed was the timing and the direction of the forced move, not the observation underneath it. The crowd still is not here, and that is what this report is about.
